A fun steampunkish gournament with a strongly positive nod to spiders.
A fascinating piece that very intentionally created itself… I was simply the hands and intuition who happened to be listening.
Inside this Miniature Chinese Bottle Gourd (safely behind glass) sits a large mama spider created from various repurposed items and jewelry parts. Her eggs adorn different parts of the outside of the gournament along with quite a few other recycled items. The gourd surface holds a meshing of words (available upon request) from Mother Goose, Don Marquis (archy and mehetabel), Mary Howitt (The Spider and the Fly), Anonymous (Incy Wincy Spider), E. B. White, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
This gournament comes to you ready to hang on your hook, measures approximately 5.5” tall and is about 3” wide. As always, don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Don’t ask me specifically where this one came from… it truly is one of a kind where I’m concerned. The bits and pieces came together slowly and very intentionally. It took me some time to be able to understand what it wanted to be and shifted several times as I worked to hear more clearly. I currently see this piece as a sort of Orwellian two-years-after 1984, hence its name. Though there can be a dismal glimpse of the future here, I see a lot of beauty and would tend toward the hope it could bring in stopping us short if we truly see the future and shift our direction before getting too much further down the road.
Inside the front glass window, one views a futuristic, borg-style babe’s head nestled in the cave. Rough metal fence and other pieces frame the hard-fired porcelain, metal, and Apoxie-Sculpt® child in the velvety smooth gourd interior. We find choice and sharp contrast. There are two other “windows” that can be used for viewing, but I feel are beautiful in their own right. One is to the left side of the front and is an old, rusted ball bearing cage. The other is situated to the upper right of the front and is an old, rusted gear. All windows are installed with Apoxie-Sculpt. Topping off this piece is a rusted piece of old, crushed spring which coils around the stem of the gourd and nestles into a hand-carved bone bead mimicking the frown of the babe inside.
Measuring nearly 9” by nearly 5”, the metal and Apoxie-Sculpt® used in this special creation make it surprisingly heavy and stable. As always, please don’t hesitate to ask questions or request more photos (I have them).
